Record entries received
5 June 09
A record number of entries into this year’s Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize has outstripped last year’s record by almost 150 entries. Approximately half of the 837 entries from 12 different countries were received through the online system, available for the first time in 2009.

From the total number of entries to the Waterhouse Art Prize, 101 finalists have been selected. Over 30% of the finalist’s art works are from local South Australian artists.

The competition, now in its seventh year, has seen excellent growth and change from the previous years. This year the Waterhouse Youth Art Prize for artists
aged between 16 and 25 years has been introduced. The three other categories remain: paintings, works on paper, and, sculpture and objects. From these categories the judges will select the $50,000 overall winner and first, second
and third prize winners in each category.

Judges this year include renowned Australian artist Garry Shead, Head Curator
of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW Barry Pearce, Zoe D’Arcy, Director of Public Programs at the National Archives of Australia, and SA Museum Director
Dr Suzanne Miller.

Winners will be announced on Friday 17 July 2009.

The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize exhibition will be open at the South Australian Museum from 18 July to 6 September 2009.
