Competition Rules for 2010
1. The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize (“The Waterhouse”) is awarded by the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated. All artists are encouraged to enter including international artists. Staff from the South Australian Museum, the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated and people involved with the administration or judging of The Waterhouse are not eligible.

2. The subject for The Waterhouse is natural history, which for the purposes of this competition deals with the natural world which may include animal, vegetable or mineral content.

3. To enter, artists are invited to submit a CD containing one colour image of their work per category. Each image shall be of high quality no less than 150dpi and approximately A4 size. Files should be saved in JPEG or TIFF format. Accompanying this, the artist must submit a completed and signed Entry Form and a non refundable administration fee of AUD$38.50 per category. No third party may enter any work on behalf of an artist. The judges may reject an entry if, in their sole discretion, they do not consider the image(s) submitted on CD to be of sufficiently high quality. All CDs will be retained by The Waterhouse and not returned.

4. Entries must be posted or delivered to The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, South Australian Museum, North Terrace Adelaide 5000, or uploaded to www.thewaterhouse.com.au, so that they are received by no later than 5pm, Friday 14 May 2010 (faxed or emailed entries will not be accepted). Entries that are delivered late, postmarked after 5pm Friday 14 May 2010, incomplete, or not delivered free of all charges will be rejected.

5. Each artist may submit one work only per category. Each work must have been completed after January 2009.

6. Works in categories A and B must not be more than 2.5 square metres in total area (for example 1580mm x 1580mm or 1250mm x 2000mm) including frame. Works must not have one side more than 2000mm in length. Artworks must be supplied ready for hanging: flat mounting D rings are preferred.

7. Sculptures and Objects in category C must fit through a standard door when assembled (900mm x 2000mm). Works must not have one dimension greater than 2000mm in length. This will include any supports if supplied. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated may supply or arrange certain display furniture at its discretion.

8. Entrants in the Youth Art Prize must be aged 16 – 25 at the time of close of entries. Maximum one entry per person. Entries in this category must fit the criteria of category A, B or C. An entrant in the Youth Art Prize cannot also enter in the major prize categories A, B or C and is not eligible for the overall Waterhouse Art Prize. However, an artist of any age is welcome to enter the main prize categories A, B or C, instead of the Youth Art Prize if they prefer. Entrants in the Youth Art Prize are eligible for the People’s Choice Award.

9. The judges will select finalist works for exhibition from the image provided and each finalist shall be notified accordingly. Inclusion of finalists in the exhibition and the manner of exhibition of each included work shall be at the sole discretion of the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated.

10. Finalist works that are selected for exhibition must be sent with paperwork attached to the back of the work, to The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, South Australian Museum, North Terrace Adelaide, 5000, in person or by courier at the artist’s expense and must be free of all charges. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated will not pay any expenses. The selected works must arrive between Monday 28th June and Friday 2rd July 2010, between 10am and 5pm. Where the work is late, is not delivered free of all charges, or if paperwork is incomplete, the work will be ineligible for inclusion in the exhibition. All works submitted must be as represented in the photograph provided by the artist. If the work differs from the photograph submitted, the work will also be ineligible for inclusion in the exhibition.

11. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated will not be responsible for any loss or damage of works in transit. Artists are advised to arrange suitable insurance for transit. Works that arrive damaged will not be exhibited and the artist notified accordingly.

12. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated will insure all works while in its custody. This will be to the value of the sale price less commission stated in the Entry Form. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated will not be responsible for uninsured loss or for loss or damage exceeding the insured amount.

13. The exhibition will be open from Saturday 17th July 2010 until Sunday 5th September 2010 from 10am until 5pm daily. Exhibition entry will be $5 including catalogue.

14. The artist agrees that all works exhibited shall be for sale. The sale price indicated in the Entry Form shall apply and shall remain fixed for the duration of the exhibition. Artworks entered as a series of panels or objects will be sold as an entire work. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated will charge 33.3% commission on all sales (which shall be deducted from the indicated sale price).

15. The overall winning artwork of the "The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize" will be acquired by the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated. All other prizes are non-acquisitive and those works will be for sale at their sale price stated in the Entry Form.

16. The entries will be presented anonymously and judged purely on their artistic merit. Any obvious signatures will be obscured. The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

17. The prize winners, except the winner of the People’s Choice Award, will be notified on 16 July 2010. The People’s Choice Award will be announced on the Artist's evening (attendance by invitation) at the South Australian Museum, on Wednesday 25th August 2010.

18. All works entered must be available for display for the duration of the exhibition. Selected works may travel interstate at the conclusion of the exhibition in Adelaide. They will tour at the expense of the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated. The artist or purchaser must arrange for collection of their works from the South Australian Museum at the end of the tour, at their expense.

19. By entering, the artist consents to images of their works being reproduced, and their biographical information and/or photograph being used by the South Australian Museum and/or the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated, and their agents without additional compensation.

20. The artist warrants that their entry and any other works and materials submitted are original, are the property of the artist and do not infringe any third-party rights. The artist shall, at any time requested by the South Australian Museum, execute such documents and do such acts as may be reasonably required to perfect the rights granted to them by these Conditions. By entering, the artist further agrees to indemnify and hold the South Australian Museum, the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, parents, subsidiaries, successors, and assigns, harmless from any liability or damages of any kind, including legal fees and costs, resulting from any claim of infringement or other proprietary right of any person or entity.

21. At the conclusion of the exhibition all unsold works not touring must be collected from the South Australian Museum, North Terrace Adelaide, 5000, between Monday 13th September 2010 and Tuesday 14th September 2010, 10am – 5pm. If any works are to be returned by courier, this must be arranged by the artist or purchaser (as applicable), at their expense.

22. Any works not collected within the time specified shall be dealt with in accordance with the Unclaimed Goods Act 1987 (SA).

23. The South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated is the sole owner of the information collected from the entry forms and any other information submitted, and will not sell, share, or rent this information to others except for the sole purpose of advertising or promoting “The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize”.
